Statement
Drawing and painting at an early age, I can't remember when I wasn't at an easel. I developed throughout the years a love of pastels, and find that my paintings can be most expressive in this medium. In a capture a moment of inspiration with movement, sketching can be a challenge since I am fascinated with the sky and water. I paint my works in my home-studio, but they begin either on location with a brief sketch and/or referenced photos. With movement of water and the changing cloud formations, I need a continuous shooting of images. These referenced materials pull the scene back into my memory giving me a sense of the place and feeling the scene. I begin sketching lightly on my preferred choice of paper, Uart Premium Sanded Pastel Paper, 600 Grade. This grade of tooth I use primarily because of the easiness it accepts soft pastels, and I can utilize my blending stroke to capture the movements I want. I basically use soft pastels such as Terry Ludwig, Schmincke, and Unison because their extra softness and smoothness enables me to blend and flat stroke one-layer pastels easily. I do not use an under painting as I have in the past, and this paper does not need a spray fixative when complete. I love the results I can obtain with pastels and focus mainly on this medium either though I am a multi-media artist. exhibitions & awards
